Epson is known for producing high-quality film and photo scanners at a reasonable price. The Epson Perfection V550 ($739.99 Amazon) is no exception. The scanner is identical to the Editors Choice Epson Perfection V500, which it replaces, but there are two important differences. It includes a utility that allows you to upload scans to email and Facebook. Photoshop Elements is gone, and the V550 doesn’t come with a photo-editing program. It still offers impressive scan quality and the ability to scan multiple 35mm slides, film negatives, or both, as well as the Digital Ice hardware-based solution to film scanning. It is the Editors’ Choice for flatbed photocentric scanners.

The V550 is 4.6 inches by 11.2 inches by 19.1 inches in size and 9.6 pounds in weight. The maximum scan area is 8.5×11.7 inches and the maximum optical resolution is 6,400 dpi. With the removable transparency unit, it can scan four 35mm slides and two rows of six negatives, as well as medium-format film. It can scan multiple photos at once, thanks to its auto edge detection technology, which automatically detects the image’s size and crops it accordingly.

The V550, like the Epson V500 includes Digital ICE (the hardware-based method for digitally removing dirt and scratches) that can be used in film scanning. Digital ICE is preferred over software-based dust removal on prints.

Software and Setup
The V550 setup is simple: Simply install the software, plug the USB cable and power cord in, and the scanner will turn on. It was installed on Windows Vista. Two scan utilities are included in the software: Epson Scan with Epson Easy Photo Fix technology and Epson Easy Photo Print- plus an OCR program, Abbyy fineReader 9.0 Sprint. It supports scanning from almost any Windows program that has a scan command, including Twain or WIA drivers. It is not like the Epson V500 or theEpson Perfection V600It came with Adobe Photoshop Elements. However, it does not have a separate program for photo editing.

Any of the four buttons can be used to scan to a searchable PDF with adjustable settings. You can also copy (send a scan to your Printer), email (create an email message with the scan attached to JPEG), or launch the Epson scan utility. This will scan and save the file to disk in any image format you choose. There are four modes available in Epson Scan Utility: Full Auto (Home, Office, Professional), and Professional (Office, Home, Business, and Professional). The Professional mode allows film scanning and supports Digital ICE.
