Samsung UN55RU8000FXZA Review

The bottom line

Samsung’s RU8000 series 4K TVs are accurate in color, have tons of features and a very Samsung-centric philosophy.

MSRP $9999.99$749.00 Amazon

Pros

  • Accurate colors
  • Attractive design
  • Smart TV platform offers many useful features such as voice assistant and smart home functions.

Cons

  • Panel is relatively dim
  • Samsung-specific voice assistant, smart home compatibility

We are very curious to see how Samsung’s microLED technology compares to OLED. The Q9FN QLED television displayed some of the best contrast performance we have ever seen. The RU8000 series is another example of Samsung’s midrange TVs . The 4K TVs have the same feature-packed smart TV platform that Samsung’s flagship models. It also shows remarkable color performance (though not as strong as the Q9FN). Although its features are mostly Samsung-specific, it has a low brightness and excellent colors. We expect a brighter panel at $1,399.99 for UN65RU8000FXZA, which we tested.

Design

Although the RU8000 isn’t the smallest in profile or has the narrowest bezels, it looks stylish and trim enough to avoid the “plain black plastic” look that many mid-range TVs succumb to. Flat 0.4-inch gunmetal grey plastic bezels frame the screen, giving it the look of brushed aluminum. These bezels match the TV’s two parallel feet (unless it is mounted on a wall) and are lighter than the dark gray, curvilinear, textured plastic back. The flat TV’s front is interrupted by a small metallic rectangle at the bottom of the bezel. It holds the Samsung logo and a small power button. This minimalist design is just right for the TV, but it doesn’t make the TV stand out from the rest.

Except for the power connector, which is closer to the right side, all ports on RU8000 face left. They are located in a recess at the back of TV. There are four HDMI ports, two USB connections, an optical audio out, an antenna/cable connector and an Ethernet port. A 3.5mm port is available for EX-Link/RS232 system integration. There are no legacy analog video connections such as component or composite, so if you wish to connect an old VCR/SNES to the new TV, you will be out of luck.
